Inspiration

  • This project tasked the class to use Italian design as inspiration for a bike helmet. I chose to specifically focus on the design house, Pininfarina. Being an automotive design house, I took inspiration of their use of lighting elements, in both new and old models. I also found their furniture line to be interesting as it was very simple yet elegant.

Initial Concepts

  • I chose to focus on the commuter sector of biking, specifically E-Bike commuters. For urban commuting, it is important that other motorist are able to see you on the road, highlighting the need for lighting on the helmet itself. The helmet I chose to explore further was the one that contained both a headlight and twilight for maximum visibility.

Clay Model

  • Before I went into CAD, I made a clay model on a prop head in order to best visualized how the helmet would look on an actual person. This gave me confidence in my design, assuring me that I had made the right design choices.
